It’s no lie that I am a total ‘girly girl’, but there (of course) are times when my edgy style steps in to camouflage that a little bit. However, my heart has a special place for feminine, chic styles that let my true personality shine through – sassy & girly.
I’ve always said that I have multiple personal styles because it just depends on the mood I am in that day when I am standing in front of my racks of clothes. I may pull out my ratty boyfriend jeans with holes the size of Mars or I may pull out my textured tights with a frilly dress & heels. I looove this quote that you may have seen before:
When a woman says, “I have nothing to wear!” What she really means is, “There’s nothing here for who I’m supposed to be today.” -Caitlin Moran
And that’s just it. When you go to your closet, think to yourself ‘Who do I want to be today?’ … I believe that everyone has their main style that they stick to most of the time, but having a few extra styles to mix in every now and then is a good thing! I’m all about mixing things up in life – fashion trends, mascaras, shampoos, margaritas (lol, literally). Never get too comfortable, even in your own personal style – when you challenge yourself to step outside of the box, you usually discover something incredible! There may be days when you feel carefree & adventurous so your style should reflect that. The next day, you may feel like a professional businesswoman ready to get things done! On this particular day, I was feeling extra girly and chic, but instead of grabbing one of my go-to feminine looks, I challenged myself to find a new combo that would make myself step out of the box – out of my comfort zone – into something new & fresh.
black turtleneck | black leather shorts (dupes here) | similar chartreuse jacket (mine is old – linked more options at the bottom of this post) | black Tory Burch cross body | similar white boots | Banana Republic necklace | Banana Republic earrings – sold out (similar HERE) | gloves (similar) | lips | shimmer eyeshadow (I’ve been wearing this everyday lately, courtesy of @emilyanngemma of The Sweetest Thing!)
Funny backstory about this outfit .. I was explaining it to my mom and showing it to her on the hangers before putting it on, and she was like ehhh. Just not really feeling it. So, I was like, “Just trust me” haha. I put it on, and she ended up really loving it! TIP: When you are trying to dress outside of the box, always try on the entire outfit before throwing it to the side with the rest of your floordrobe (Does anyone else have one of these? lol) … it’s so much easier to judge a look once it’s actually on you versus being on the hanger, especially when it is something that you have never worn or styled before!
My chartreuse ruffle jacket is old, so it’s sold out everywhere but I did link a similar one above and a few similar styles at the bottom of this post! I decided to pop a white bootie with this look and tie it all together with my b&w bow-accented gloves to keep the extra chic vibes going on.
One of my favorite things about this outfit is that it’s a very wintery look, but it still shows a bare leg. Where I live, it’s easy to do this even during the winter months because one day it’ll be in the 30’s and the next day it’s in the 60’s. A lot of the time, I feel like we forget that it’s OKAY to show skin even when it’s cooler outside. I mean, if it’s a snowstorm then go ahead & layer up with your fur-hooded parka & fleece-lined leggings, but if it’s not below freezing I am usually fine to show a little leg & mix it up a bit. (But then again, my lower body is always warmer than my upper body – it may be reversed for you!)
The way these pieces were styled makes the entire outfit look fresh and unique because you don’t typically see something like this everywhere during the colder months. Don’t ever be afraid to stand out from the crowd & do something different than what everyone else is doing. 🙂 I promise, it’s actually a lot of fun!
When I come across similar posts like this one, I always want to immediately go to my closet and start playing around with new looks – but maybe that’s just the stylist in me, lol. Either way, I hope you all feel inspired now to step outside of the box & try a new style .. even if it’s just a new outfit combo in your own style that you are already accustomed to! Of course the main thing to remember is to always stay true to yourself & don’t just copy someone else’s personal style because then it’s not you! Once you start experimenting and playing around with new looks, you’ll probably realize that there are a few other styles out there that you like as well & you can then incorporate those every once in awhile to your everyday wardrobe.
